Noteringar
Poul Heegaard was a professor of mathematics at Copenhagen University 1910 - 1917 and at Christiania (later Oslo) University 1918 - 1941. Today he is best known for his contributions to the study of three-manifolds; in fact Heegaard splittings and Heegaard diagrams <math.ucdavis.edu/profiles/glossary.html> are household words in that area, unfortunately often with the name misspelled as Heegard or even Hegard.
Poul Heegaard (November 2 </wiki/November_2>, 1871 </wiki/1871> - February 7 </wiki/February_7>, 1948 </wiki/1948>) was a Danish </wiki/Denmark> mathematician </wiki/Mathematician> active in the field of topology </wiki/Topology>. His 1898 thesis introduced a concept now called the Heegaard splitting </wiki/Heegaard_splitting> of a 3-manifold </wiki/Manifold>. Heegaard's ideas allowed him to make a careful critique of work of Henri Poincaré </wiki/Henri_Poincar%C3%A9>. Poincaré had overlooked the possibility of the appearance of torsion </wiki/Torsion> in the homology </wiki/Homology_(mathematics)> groups of a space.
He later co-authored, with Max Dehn </wiki/Max_Dehn>, a foundational article on combinatorial topology </wiki/Combinatorial_topology>, in the form of an encyclopedia entry.
Heegaard studied mathematics at the University of Copenhagen </wiki/University_of_Copenhagen>, from 1889 to 1893 </wiki/1893> and following years of travelling, and teaching mathematics, he was appointed professor at University of Copenhagen in 1910.
Following a dispute with the faculty over, among other things, the hiring of Harald Bohr </wiki/Harald_Bohr> as professor </wiki/Professor> at the University (Heegaard was against it); Heegaard accepted a professorship at Kristianssand </wiki/University_of_Oslo> in Norway </wiki/Norway>, where he worked till his retirement in 1941
